A message from Hawai'i

Aloha, my name is Bryce Kuhr. I am living on a farm in North Kohala, Hawaii. I am working for an institution called HIP Ag, the Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture. After taking a four-week sustainable living course where we lived in t
ents and farmed the land, I decided to stay for a yearlong permaculture apprenticeship. I am still living in a tent, in an area where new students will be camping. My birthday recently passed (7/29), and I need to raise money to buy a Halé (a small cottage). A Halé is an eight by sixteen foot cottage that can fit a comfortable bed, a small closet, and a small kitchenette. I will be getting light from solar energy, water from a well and fresh breezes through the screen walls.
My goal is to be a permaculture educator, teaching others from abroad and in the community how to grow organic foods for themselves and their family. With donations to HIP Ag in my name, Bryce Kuhr, you can help me achieve my goal to increase awareness of organic foods and sustainable living. I am the happiest I have ever been eating local organic foods every day. I am also living with a community of family and friends who understand me and encourage me to grow. Through the “aloha spirit”, I have fallen in love with life again, I am excited to wake up in the morning. Through your support I can be in a better position to teach others to grow organic food for themselves and others increasing their health. I am happy to send photographs showing the progress of the Hale to anyone who donates.

“We have a special opportunity to offer a sustainable living course in one of the most pristine parts of Hawaii, North Kohala. Our courses offer a unique curriculum that facilitates the student growing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I have seen this education change lives, giving students life long hands on skills and healthy living habits.”

This Halé will cost $3,500, and with your donation you can help change my life and maybe the world some day.

"just another shitty day in paradise":

Last time on Food Whisperer... dun dun dun

Now what?? AMAZING FOOD! Thats what!

Sorry for no step by step pictures, when in Hawai'i you work with what you got.

I started out taking the pork belly, which when cured in bacon, and I boiled it for 10 minutes in agua.

Then I boiled it in this pickling liquid for 30 minutes.

4 cups water
3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 dozen whole cloves
1 dozen whole peppercorns
3/4 cup brown sugar

For full recipe click HERE

Then once that is done boiling I put into a dry cast iron pan and fried it until crisp.

A good breakfast needs fried plantains.. duh.

With two organic eggs from the farm, breakfast for champions.

This meal was 100% from the land.

I went on a run to the cliffs after this ginormous breakfast.

See the sunburn on my chest? Hawai'i man!

We went to sushi rock, yum.

This is Ono avocado and sprouts roll with some kind of sweet and sour reduction.
Ohmygoodness this was delicious.

Tuna and yellow tail.

Then we also got a mango mac-nut spicy tuna roll but we ate it too fast for me to take a picture.

Here is one of many fruit smoothies I have been a-chuggin.

Pork shoulder stew? Heck yeah!

This stew was lunch, and for dinner I took the meat out and shredded it for tacos.

This was such a last minute throw together meal.

Nick who has lived in Mexico and southern California says it tasted like authentic Carnitas. So I strongly recommend impressing people with this!

Tooth brush party!

I leave this wonderful island tonight. But still stick with me for some reflections.

Also when I am living in the city I am non-stop baking and blogging so follow me on my journey through high school!

Being busy in paradise:

To start this post off right here are some beautiful views.

I worked the Saturday market again this week, last week was Hawi (havvie) this week was Waimea!

This week I worked at Waimea market which is bigger, there are more booths, more variety, and more tourists. Great to shop at, but it looses the hometown Hawai'i feel a little; its a mixed bag.

Let me explain,
Last week I met new people that knew about the farm and knew about the people I was staying with. Everyone knew everyone else and all the booths were trading. We came home from that trip with tons of fruits and veggies and chocolate. We didn't sell as much, though.

This week food sales were booming! We sold out of all 8 sacks of lychee. We almost sold all of the macnuts and we made BANK, but we didn't know anyone else and people were not excited about trading.

I had an amazing time at both markets and if you ever come to Hawai'i you MUST go to them both and then go cook an amazing meal.

Oh, and I ate a lot..

Eggs Benedict for breakfast.

Cone sushi, this is tofu skin rapped around white rice.

The BEST chocolate cake that I have ever had. It shouldn't even have been called cake, lets be honest people, it was fudge.

That wasn't enough? I also had a Belgian waffle with nutella and whipped cream on top.

Almost forgot, a strawberry smoothie pop too.

Whats better after a long morning of eating? Beautiful views!

This is a view of the Kohala coast.

Waking up at 4:30am, working all morning, and coming home at 12 feels like the day is over, but not it Hawai'i!

We went on a little hike... meaning walking though this grass.

Guys I'm kidding this was not little.

Silly Winton

The walk was so worth it! Waterfall, refreshing ice cold water, sick jumps, cannon ball contest. The whole bazang.

We are in Hawai'i, of course a machete was taken on our hike to open coconuts.

This is Nick when he is cold and being attacked by mosquitoes.

This is Nick taking a normal picture.

This is Nick enjoying himself.

Technology these days.. this is the field we walked through.

Dinner time!

Jyoti smile!

Veggie stir fry with fried rice.

And poached quail eggs? Yes please.

Didn't think that was enough? My cousin shot a pig.

So we took this pig,
-de-gutted it
-skinned it
-butchered it
AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Don't worry guys, they had light because I held the flash light the whole time!

Little piggy in the freezer.

Stay tuned to find out what we did with this beast!

Farmers breakfast in paradise:

She picked this outfit out all by herself..

Now back to the food, today I made french toast for breakfast.

Yummy white bread from the farmers market.

Soaked in a custard with

-1 egg per piece of bread
-Cinnamon
-Vanilla
-Whole milk

On to the griddle till nice and brown on both sides.

Nothing like some help from my little helper.

Top it off with some butter from the farm and honey..

Breakfast for a farmer!

And a blog post isn't complete without some pictures of cute kids... right?

She walks around with this yellow ballon saying
